Believe Housing Australia launches much-needed affordable rental homes in Adelaide

Believe Housing Australia has today launched a $14 million affordable housing development providing much-needed rental homes for more than 100 South Australians priced out of the rental market.

Believe Housing Australia has been overwhelmed by demand. The first 20 of 37 affordable homes at Believe Housing Mansfield Park have attracted more than 700 enquiries and 250 tenant applications in the first weeks of their release.

The 37 purpose-built two and three-bedroom rental homes on Wilson Street, which include six specialist disability accommodation units, are fully funded and managed by Tier 1, not-for-profit community housing provider Believe Housing Australia.

Young full-time workers, young working families, people aged 55 and over, and those living with disability on moderate incomes can apply for tenancy to the affordable rental homes.

The last group of affordable homes at Believe Housing Mansfield Park have just been completed and will go to market later this month.

The first tenants, a couple aged over 55, a full-time working mother and her son, a disability worker and an essential health worker made Believe Housing Mansfield Park their home less than a month ago.

Believe Housing Mansfield Park was launched by Human Services Minister Nat Cook today.

Believe Housing Mansfield Park has been developed with support from the State Government’s Renewing Our Streets and Suburbs (ROSAS) project. ROSAS, overseen by the SA Housing Authority, is delivering more than 1000 new homes and improving the sustainability of the state’s social housing into the future.

Our tenants and those applying for tenancy are reporting extreme hardship in finding an affordable rental property across Adelaide as rents keep rising amid record low vacancy rates.

We know that the affordable housing shortage hurts those on low incomes most, however what is most surprising is the growing number of full-time workers on moderate incomes who are now also struggling to afford a roof over their heads.

The good news is that Community Housing Providers, like Believe Housing Australia, are working hard with federal, state and local governments to maximise the billion-dollar pipeline of affordable housing investment expected through the Housing Australia Future Fund (HAFF).

Believe Housing Mansfield Park is a great example of what we can achieve when government and Community Housing Providers work together.

Together we are building communities, like this one in Mansfield Park, where people can live with the peace of mind that access to affordable housing brings.

We are experiencing a housing shortage across the country, and too often we see the people with the lowest incomes struggling to find a place to call home.

This is why we are committed to working with our community housing partners to support them to deliver more social housing to South Australians, through programs like Renewing Our Streets and Suburbs.

This development shows the great work done by the community housing sector and we expect to see hundreds more under the $2 billion Social Housing Accelerator and $10 billion Housing Australia Future Fund.

For the first time in a generation, we have state and federal governments investing in public and community housing at the same time to help those in need.

Believe Housing Australia and AnglicareSA is investing more than $100M in social and affordable housing to 2032 as part of a strategic investment and asset management plan to boost affordable housing stock in South Australia and maintain and upgrade existing community housing.
