A striking partnership offering social inclusion

Believe Housing Australia tenant Peter looks forward to his fortnightly bowling session, heading to the lanes for a bit of fun and the chance to socialise with others.

“I get to talk to others and have a laugh,” Peter said.

Peter said the regular bowling sessions, facilitated by recreational and sports charity Reclink through a partnership with Believe Housing Australia, have encouraged him to go out and connect with others.

“Activities like the bowling program have helped me get out of the house and into the community, while maintaining my social circle,” Peter said.

Believe Housing Australia Placemaking and Area Improvements Officer, Wendy Hurmuzniya, said through the partnership with Reclink, tenants have access to sports and recreational activities such as bowling, games, and other group gatherings free of charge.

“It provides our tenants with affordable and accessible opportunities to connect with others in the local community and, above all, do something fun,” Wendy said.

It’s a move that’s right up the tenants’ alley, with the Reclink-supported activities, particularly the bowling program, always well attended.

“We have seen that tenants who previously might have faced major obstacles to participation can better access the activities and programs through this partnership,” she said.

“The participants have a ‘Bragging Book’ for the bowling program, which they have been updating since 2022 with scores, photos, and memorable moments, including a lot of strikes.”

Reclink Sports Coordinator, Symone Robertson, facilitates the programs and said she had noticed participants were more engaged and social with each session.

“We have participants who regularly come to the programs and get a lot of enjoyment out of it,” she said.

“Newbies are welcomed into the group too.

“It’s also really lovely to hear that some of the participants catch up outside this program.”

That’s the case for Peter, who catches up with his new friends outside Reclink’s bowling and coffee and games programs for a cuppa and a chat.

“It has been good for my mental health, being among good company and having a laugh.”

“It has enhanced my social circle.”
