From renting to home ownership
For Susan, a single mother of 13 children, Adelaide’s northern suburbs will always be her home.
It’s where she’s lived for 15 years, first as a Believe Housing Australia (formerly AnglicareSA housing) tenant, and then as a first-time homeowner.
Susan became a homeowner in 2021 after buying the community housing property she had been renting for 12 years.
“This house has been my home for a long time,” Susan said.
“I would be sad if I had to leave this house because I love this area.”
Her decision to buy her home came after attending several Believe Housing Australia Home Ownership Seminars and gaining valuable information about the process.
“Believe Housing Australia discussed with me the process of getting a loan and taught me how to save money,” she said.
After arriving in Australia on a humanitarian visa as a refugee, Susan said being able to buy her own home has also meant security for her children, eight of which still live with her.
“I have more security and freedom,” she said.
“I look around my house and feel proud to be a homeowner. I hope my children feel inspired to become homeowners in the future themselves.”
Since buying her home, Susan has been busy adding personal touches, often enlisting the help of her children.
“It’s my house and I can decorate it however I want. I can plant, renovate, even change the colour of the rooms,” she said.
“I’ve been working on the exterior of the house. I have painted the front verandah posts pink, removed some tree branches, and laid some pavers to make extra driveway space.
“My children have helped me with this, and we work together as a team.”
During the 2023/2024 financial year 12 Believe Housing Australia tenants purchased their own homes like Susan.
